No matter what type of stone, D&R Masonry Restoration has the knowledge and expertise to restore it. We’ve performed stone restoration on numerous historical structures including the iconic Timberline Lodge and the Pittock Mansion.
Not only are our crews trained experts in old fashioned techniques of restoring stone, we keep them up on the newest stone restoration methods and latest materials to hit the market. Whether it’s Limestone, Sandstone, Granite, Marble or any other type of stone used in building construction, if it needs restoration, D&R Masonry Restoration’s experts are the pros for the job.
We understand that it’s important to treat stone with special care and attention. Many individuals may not know that stone restoration actually requires mechanical abrasion or diamond grinding to get rid of marks and scratches. It sounds like these techniques might have the opposite effect, but they act like sanders. Before the process, the stone is thoroughly cleaned and prepped. Then abrasion or grinding is used to do the bulk of the real restoration work. Finally, a finishing technique is used to give you the final look you want.
Stone restoration isn’t just useful if your stone is damaged. If you simply want to change the finish, we can do that as the main service or after some standard abrasion assistance. There are a surprising number of finishes which can be used depending on the exact effect you desire. Here are some popular examples.
Polished Finish: If you want your stone to shine and reflect light like nothing else, a polished finish is definitely what you want to choose. Stone with this finish can be more prone to scratches and can also be damaged by strong cleaners. However, the surface becomes excellent for easy clean up as it is not very porous, which is why it is a good choice for types like granite and marble.
Flamed Finish: A flamed finish gives stone a rustic, beautifully textured style. By heating and cooling the stone in succession, it allows it to burn and then recover from the pressure, creating a unique look. Because the stone needs to be able to take the harsh flamed finish process, granites work best overall, along with some types of limestone and marble. This is a particularly impressive finish for outdoor spaces.
Brushed Finish: The brushed finish is perfect for giving your stone an older style that makes it seem as if it has really stood the test of time. It is achieved using a strong, forceful brush application that allows it to look worn while still being smooth. A brushed finish will also look slightly different on each type of stone it is applied to so you can rely on a unique touch.
Honed Finish: If you’re looking for something similar to a polished finish but don’t want quite such a “super shine”, the honed finish is perfect for your project. It follows the same process up until the buffing phase which means your stone can keep some of its natural integrity. This does leave its pores more open and likely for eventual stain, however it also means scratches will not be shown as much. The honed finish is often used for limestone, travertine, marble, and granite.
Leathered Finish: A leathered finish works well for darker stone to give it a warm shine that isn’t as high-powered as the polished finish look. It makes the surface non-reflective, slip-resistant, and helps keep it easy to clean by closing pores.
Sandblasted Finish: Sandblasted finish is applied just like its name illustrates – with sand blasted onto the stone to give it a weathered, textured look without being as harshly done as the flamed finish. It also allows it to have a matte gloss.
